^a1. About The Program
^2────────────────────
^fByteRaper 2000^7 was coded by ^eMaciek "LiTENiNG" Drejak^7 in ^3Borland Pascal 7.0^7.
ByteRaper reads the file that you want to view directly from the hard disk
to screen, so using ^3SMARTDRV.EXE^7 will increase the performance of the program
drastically. It's main purpose is to view different kinds of data from
miscellaneous files. It's also able to remove or edit data that you often
want to get your hands on, like ^3graphics^7 and ^3music^7. Please note
that this ripper cannot be used for cracking games. The latest version of
Byte Raper 2000 can be downloaded at ^eDigital Laboratory +46-(0)31-267840^7.
This version of the ripper has ^35 different ways to view the file^7 :
^e1. Graphic viewer
^e2. Textmode viewer
^e3. Hexadecimal viewer
^e4. Normal text-file viewer
^e5. Color text-file (usually .BIN) viewer
In all the modes you can move around with the cursor keys, PgUp, PgDn etc.
The ^3current file position^7 is the ^3upper left^7 character (or pixel) on
the screen. Each mode is selected by pressing the number of the mode on the
keyboard.
^7In the ^3Graphic viewer^7 you can view the file as a graphical
image. It's easy to learn how a sample, module or picture looks like in
the gfx viewer. The ^3current file position^7 is the ^3upper left pixel^7 on the
screen.
The ^3Textmode viewer^7 shows the file as an image of characters in ^d80*25 text
mode.
The ^3Hexadecimal viewer^7 works somewhat like a disk editor.
The ^3Normal text-file viewer^7 works almost like a normal text browser.
The ^3Color text-file Viewer^7 loads the file directly to screen in text-
mode. The first byte that is read to screen represents a ^3color^7. The second
represents an ^3ascii value^7, the next byte is a color and the next is a ascii
value and so on.
^a2. Complete key description (works in all modes)
^2────────────────────────────────────────────────
^eEnter : Miscellaneous info.
^7 When you press ^3Enter^7 an info screen will appear. On this screen the
filename and file size will be available. Other things like how many bytes
one screen takes and version is also available.
^eF1 : QuickHelp
^7 When you press ^3F1^7 the QuickHelp screen will appear.
The QuickHelp screen is viewed by a beta version of a program called
^3Extreme Viewer^7 which is also made by me.
^eShift-F1 : Manual
^7 This allows you to browse in the manual (this file). ^3Extreme Viewer^7 is
also used here.
^eF2 : Reset palette
^7 When you press ^3F2^7 you'll ^3reset the palette^7 to the default.
^eF3 : Jump 768 bytes backwords
^7 This will ^3jump^7 ^a768^7 ^3bytes^7 (= pixels) ^3backwords^7 in the file.
The size of each ^3color^7 in a 256-color palette is ^a3^7 bytes.
Therefor the size of a 256-color palette is ^a256^7*^a3^7=^a768^7 bytes.
This can be useful when the palette of an image is before the image in the
file. You just have to get the beginning of the image on screen and jump
^a768^7 bytes backwords in the file, and you'll have the beginning of
the palette at the current position. This function will be explained later
in this doc.
^eF4 : Read palette
^7 This will change the current palette. It will assume that the current
position is the beginning of the palette that you want to load, and
starts reading at the current position of the file and reads ^a768^7 bytes
forward (since one 256-color palette is ^a768^7 bytes long).
^eShift-F4 : Show current palette
This Shows the current palette in ^d320x200^7. The upper half of the screen is
vertical lines of all colors. Color ^a0^7 is leftmost and color ^a255^7 is
rightmost. The lower part of the screen is a matrix of all colors.
Color ^a0^7 is in the upper left corner and color ^a255^7 is in the lower right corner.
^eF5 : Fill Block
This function will start at the current position and fill the file with a
chosen byte-value to chosen position
If you are at the end of the file (done by pressing ^eEND^7) and use this
function it will ^3expand the file^7.
^eF6 : Search for module in file
By pressing ^eF6^7 the ripper will start ^3searching for a module^7 in the file.
The ripper will start at the current position and continue searching
forward. This function searches for strings like ^dM.K.^7, ^dFLT4^7, ^dFLT8^7,
^d6CHN^7, ^d8CHN^7 which are located in MOD files. When a match is found you'll
get the songname on screen and a little menu that looks like this :
^fs^e : Save module to file.
^fj^e : Jump to mod position.
^fEnter^e : Continue search.
^7(^fv^e : View module info.^7)
^7(^fp^e : Play module.^7)
If the songname is something like ^3}Ωτ╘⌡Ç╞^7 then it's NOT a module, just
a false alarm. When you've found a real module you can press ^eS^7 to save
the module to a file, or maybe press ^eV^7 to view the samplenames and other
info (this is done with a program called ^3SHOWMOD^7). You can also press ^eP
to play the module, this is done with a program called ^3Music Disk Player^7,
and it's made by ^ePSI^7 of ^eFuture Crew^7. Read the file ^3MDP.DOC^7 in the
\UTILS directory for more information about the program.
^eF8 : Dosshell
When you press ^eF8^7 you'll ^3shell to dos^7. Just type ^eEXIT^7 to return to
^3ByteRaper^7.
^eF9 : Save Block
This is used to save an area from a file to a new file.
The block begins at ^3the current position^7. You will be asked for the
length of the block (in bytes) and the filename to save the block to.
^eF10 : Find string.
This searches the file for a string given by you. By pressing
^eTAB^7 while typing the string you can toggle between ^3case-sensitive^7 and
^3non case-sensitive^7 search. It searches from the current position and forward.
Case-sensitive means that the search will recognize the difference between,
for example, an "a" and an "A".
^eESC : Jump to next file ^7or^e quit.
If ^3wildcards^7(*,?) are specified ^eESC^7 means ^3jump to the next file^7.
If no wildcards are specified or if it's the last file in the wildcard que
^eESC^7 will ^3quit the ripper^7.
^eAlt-X : Quit.
This will quit the ripper and return to DOS.
^eKeypad + : Increase vertical screen size.
This ^3increases^7 the vertical (Y) screen size ^3with one line^7. This does not change
the graphic resolution. ^3ByteRaper^7 scrolls faster the less vertical screen-
size specified.
^eKeypad - : Decrease vertical screen size.
This ^3decreases^7 the vertical (Y) screen size with one line.
^eKeypad * : Increase horizontal screen size.
This ^3increases^7 the horizontal (X) screen size ^3with one pixel^7. Note that
when this is pressed the last pixel on the first line will end up at the
beginning of the next line. These two figures try to explain what happens
when the horizontal screen size is altered. The numbers represent different
colors (or characters).
^3Horizontal screen size^7 = ^a8
^a1^72345678
^a1^72345678
^a1^72345678
^a1^72345678
^a1^72345678
^a1^72345678
^3Horizontal screen size^7 = ^a7
^a1^7234567

78^a1^72345
678^a1^7234
5678^a1^723
45678^a1^72
^eKeypad / : Decrease horizontal screen size.
This ^3decreases^7 the horizontal (X) screen size ^3with one pixel^7.
^e1 : Switch to the Graphic viewer.
See the beginning of this doc for details.
^e2 : Switch to the Textmode viewer.
See the beginning of this doc for details.
^e3 : Switch to the Hexadecimal viewer.
See the beginning of this doc for details.
^e4 : Switch to the Normal text-file viewer.
See the beginning of this doc for details.
^e5 : Switch to the Color text-file (usually .BIN) Viewer.
See the beginning of this doc for details.
^eA : About.
When you press this an About screen with version, credits etc. appears.
^eB : Make Backup.
When you press this a Backup file is created called BYTERAPE.BAK.
If the file already existed then it's overwritten.
^eC : Run SaveCheat, SaveGame editor.
This will execute a program called ^3SAVCHEAT.EXE^7.
For more information read the ^3SAVCHEAT.DOC^7 in the \UTILS directory.
^eG : Garble PK-LITE header text.
If the file which is currently browsed is a ^3PK-LITE packed EXE-file^7 then a text in
the beginning of the file reveals that the file is a PK-LITE file. If this
header is garbled the program ^3still works^7, but it is difficult to see
if the file is pk-lited or not (even pk-lite can't recognize its own file).
The info-option (^eEnter^7) will tell you if the file is pk-lited.
This works even if the pk-lite header is garbled.
^eH : Add PK-LITE heder text.
If somebody has already garbeld the PK-LITE file header text then you can
recover it by using this option. You cannot add a PK-LITE header text if the
file isn't packed with PK-LITE.
^eP : Jump to Position.
Lets you enter a position in the file to jump to.
^eR : Rip current screen and/or palette.
When you press this a menu appears :
^eSelect what to Rip :
^a1. ^eThe Screen and Palette as a ^BPCX
^a2. ^eThe Screen as ^BRAW
^a3. ^eThe Palette as ^BPAL
Press ^e1^7 if you want to save the graphical screen as a ^3.PCX^7 file.
Press ^e2^7 if you want to save the graphical screen as a ^3.RAW^7 file.
Press ^e3^7 if you want to save the palette as a ^3.PAL^7 file.
In all these options you must also type the ^3filename without extention
for the new file.
^eS : Play screen as sample.
This plays the the data that is on screen as a sample. ^3Gravis UltraSound
is used to play the sample. No other cards are supported. When playing,
keypad ^e+^7 and ^e-^7 can be used to change the playing frequency. ^eEnter^3 to
toggle between ^38-bit signed^7 and ^38-bit unsigned^7 sample format. ^eESC^7 to
exit play mode. The GUS playing routines are from a pascal UNIT called ^3GUSUNIT
by a guy called ^3Oliver Fromme^7. In the ^3GUSUNIT^7 doc it is written that the
unit does ^3NOT^7 work with ^3SBOS^7 installed, but on my computer it only works
with ^3SBOS^7 installed, funny... So try this option with, or without
^3SBOS^7.
^eT : Truncate file (delete rest of file from current pos).
I can't come up with more useful help on this option then :
^cWARNING!^3 I suggest that you know what you're doing before using this option!
^eV : Select video mode.
This sets up a menu with ^312 different 256 color resolutions^7. All resolutions
are ^3tweaked mode^7 routines so a ^3VGA register compatible card is needed^7. When
you choose a resolution the screen is shown in that resolution, after that
the ripper waits for a key to be pressed. When you press a key you return
to the ^3normal resolution^7.
^eX : Set length of lines on screen manually.
This sets the horizontal length of the lines on screen manually, that is, by
typing a number.
^eY : Set vertical screen length manually.
This sets the vertical length of the lines on sreen manually, that is, by
typing a number.
^a3. Ripping a graphical image
^2────────────────────────────
^7You start with typing ^3RIP File.Ext^7 where ^3File.Ext^7 is the file that you
want to rip the graphics from. Use the cursors to search in the file for the
image. When you've found it make sure that the image that you want to rip is
perfectly centered on the screen. Now you want to get the right ^3palette^7.
Since the palette most often starts ^a768^7 bytes before the picture, you press
^eF3^7. Now you want to grab the palette from the current position and jump back
to the original position, and this is done by pressing ^eF4^7. Now, if the image
is a ^a256^7 color image and the palette is located before the image you should
now see the image on the screen with the right palette. If the palette is still
wrong, that means that the image wasn't completely centered when you did the
^eF3-F4^7 procedure. But there can also be a problem if the image is less/more
than ^d320^7 pixels wide. If the picture is less than ^d320^7, let's say ^d110^7,
then you use the ^e*^7 and ^e/^7 keys on the keypad to adjust the number of
pixels per line to ^a110^7. Then you repeat the ^eF3-F4^7 procedure. Sometimes
the palette is also located at another position in the file. You can easily
recognize a palette, since it's shown on screen in the current palette colors.
Press ^eShift-F4^7 to check out the current palette. Okay, let's say that you've
found the image that you want to rip, you've located the correct palette, and
the image is on screen. Then just press the ^eR^7 key, and you will be asked if
you want to save the image as ^dPCX^7, ^dRAW^7 or just the palette as a ^dPAL^7.
In later versions of ^3ByteRaper^7 more formats will be supported.
^a4. Ripping a MOD file
^2─────────────────────
^7MOD files usually starts with the name of the ^3song^7. After that all the
names of the ^3samples^7. After that there is a sign, for example : ^dM.K^7, ^dFLT4^7,
^d6CHN^7, ^d8CHN^7 or ^dFLT8^7. With the ^eF6^7 command ^3ByteRaper^7 searches for such strings,
and when found, the program jumps back a certain amount of bytes, where the name of the song
is, and tells you the name of the song, and at which position the MOD file is
located. If the name of the song is just some garbage, then it's not a MOD file,
just a false alarm, so keep searching. Let's say you rip the file ^3APPEAL.EXE
(^3Cascada's Hex Appeal demo^7) then press the ^eF6^7 key, you will first encounter a
false alarm, then a MOD file in six channel MOD called Libertine. Then you will be
asked if you want to save it ^eS^7, Jump to it's position ^eJ^7, continue
searching ^eENTER^7, view module info ^eV^7 (lenght, sample names etc.) or if you
want to play the module ^eP^7. If you choose ^eS^7ave, ^3ByteRaper^7 will automatically
calculate the lenght of the MOD file and save it. NOTE: if you've found an S3M
file and you want to save it ^eByteRaper^7 will ask you how long the file is,
because it does not support the S3M structure, and can therefore not calculate
its lenght. This is no problem since the module doesn't have to be the correct
lenght to be played, just not smaller than it's real size. So to be on the safe
side just tell ^3ByteRaper^7 that it's 600kb long, and you will probably be able
to play it. More info about the ^3Module Search^7 command can be found earlier
in this doc.
^a5. How to edit the graphics in a product
^2────────────────────────────────────────
If you have found an image in a file and you would like to change it to
another picture, do this:
Convert the picture that you want to change to to PCX. Then use the ^3PCX2RAW.EXE
utility found in ^3ByteRaper's^7 ^3\UTILS^7 directory.
Then run ^3ByteRaper^7 and center the image that you want to change.
Then press ^eF7^7 to insert a block (your image). Then enter the name of
your image and it's lenght. Note: your image and the image that you want to
change must be the same resolution.
